TED is an annual conference that started in 1984, initially dedicated to the topics of Technology, Education, and Design (hence the acronym). Over time, the focus of TED expanded to include the environment, politics, language, business, science, culture, the arts, and more. TED’s motto is “ideas worth spreading”, and in the spirit of that theme, TED has created a program called TEDx.

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is call TEDxEasternHighSchool, where x=independently organized TED event. At our TEDxEastern event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. The organizers of TEDxEasternHighSchool are Ms. Brookover, SHS Librarian, Mrs. Donato, Coordinator of the Gifted & Talented Program, and Seniors Shikha Talwar and Divya Shankar.

The theme of TEDxEasternHighSchool will be Ending Extreme Poverty and Hunger, which is a Millennium Development Goal adopted by the United Nations in 2000. Our live speakers will be William J. Clark, the President and Executive Director of Philabundance, the Philadelphia Region’s largest food distribution agency, and Flavia De Souza, the Northeast Field Organizer for Bread For the World. Bread For the World is a lobbying organization devoted to ending hunger in the United States and abroad.

To learn more about TEDx events, please watch this introductory video, which explains what TED is about and how a TEDx event works. Then, if you are interested in attending, please fill out this application form. Registration is limited to 100 participants; either Mrs. Donato or Ms. Brookover will contact you if you have been selected to attend.

We will be blogging the TEDx experience over the coming weeks to keep you up to date on how the process is going, and to share information with you about the event.
